Volo Museum event? 2007/06/07 18:58
I think there was a bit of interest in a trip to the Volo Auto Museum (www.volocars.com).

Keith (Awsm502) & I will be at Volo this Sunday (Jun 10) with his car club, the Illinois Camaro Club. They don't know it yet, but there will be a Yellow Sky following them. We'll be cruising from the Fuddruckers at 59 & Lake (Addison, I think?), up to 12 & Quentin (outside of Lake Zurich) and then on to Volo. If you see a long line of Camaros followed by a cousin Sky, that will be us. :)

While we're there, Keith & I will ask the person who organized the ICC picnic what they had to do to reserve the picnic space.

This sounds like fun. It has been years since I have been there. Also I like the railroad museum, not to far away either. Weekends are at a premium for Cathy and I, in particular July 15-22 as we will be in MI with the whole Buda clan... I have two more weddings (later -- more fall-like) and a bunch of graduations for the rest of June...
I am open to Sundays as Cathy usually works Saturdays.

I haven't been to Volo Museum in a while, I'd be up for it depending on the day. Sundays are better for me, because I usually work Monday - Saturday.

Yes, Volo would be a fun trip. I work weekend mornings so would probably have to meet everyone up there..

Hi all!
I've decided to resurrect this event idea since it seemed like there was some interest. I called Volo and talked with their groups coordinator who was very interested to hear that there was a Sky/Solstice group around. (Volocars.com also keeps a listing of area car clubs and the coordinator said that he would very much like to include our information.) In short, Volo has picnic areas on their grounds that could accommodate a group of ~ 20, which is what I though we might get. The space wouldn't cost us anything and we can bring in food/cook out on small grills if we want. He mentioned that with a group of 20 we pretty much have our pick of dates.

Keith & I are familiar with picniking at Volo from our participation in the Illinois Camaro Club, who does a cruise/picnic to Volo each summer. Normally, they have a starting point in the southern suburbs and 2 waypoints along the route for others to join in. They cruise up to Volo, park, grill out, and hang out together. Everyone tours the museum on their own as they like, and people are free to leave when they are ready. Very low-key. In their case, the club provides the meat/main dish and everyone brings a dish to share and their own drinks.

So, here are some discussion points:

1. DATE(s): Anyone care to throw out some dates? I was thinking of something maybe mid-August?
2. FOOD: How would we like to handle this? If we don't want to try cooking out this first time, there is a small 50's themed lunch-stand in the museum gift shop, or there is a very yummy burger place near the museum called Fratello's (Rts. 120 & 12). I can check to see if perhaps they could cater the picnic for us. Someone who works there drives a Sky in the summer; I gave him a business card, perhaps he's joined us? :)
3. TIMING: The Camaro Club starts at around 10 am on the south side and arrives to Volo a little before Noon, so that they can start cooking lunch. If we don't want to cater, we might try timing it so that we stop at Fratello's to have lunch before contining on to the museum.

I think that's it. The route can be discussed at a later point; my vote on that is for something more scenic than I-94.

So, what do you think?

I am up for a trip. While an actual date escapes me -- Mid-August could be great.... Cooking out is fine -- but we need a trailer LOL. I like a lil roadside better - I am up for either, Aug 8-9-10 is busy with teh big Kappa rally -- how about toward the end of the month?

Yeah, the storage issue for the cooking out option is problematic. Keith & I could drop off a support vehicle in the morning, since we are literally just 15 min from the museum, but I'm not sure that we have a portable grill large enough to use as the main cooking area. I'll talk it over with Keith.

The last 3 weekends in August are currently open on our calendar (16-17; 23-24; 30-31)
